Actress

Marina Gavrilova graduated from the Leningrad State Institute of Theater, Music, and Cinematography in 1971. Her impersonation of Nadezhda and Teresa in A. Volodin’s plays A Factory Girl and Dulcinea of Tobossa drew attention to the young actress: in one year, in 1972, she was invited to the Leningrad Academy Drama Theater named after A. Pushkin.

In her first seasons, the young actress was mostly engaged in bit-part roles; she managed to create a whole series of bright and memorable typical images. Marina Gavrilova’s work both in small and major roles has always been marked with a special creative approach, actress’s willingness and ability to contribute something personal and unique into the role, distinguishing her heroines in a special way. Among the best roles of the actress there are many personages: intelligent and sarcastic Natalya, whom the actress endowed with a strong and rational character (Vassa Zheleznova by M. Gorky, 1973); egoistic and striving for happiness regardless of anything Regina (The Ghosts by G . Ibsen, 1985); seducing female warrior Mirrina (Lisistrata by Aristophanes, director Vladimir Golub, 1989); Ustinya Naumovna, a young, unscrupulous, and charming matchmaker in Scratch My Back and I’ll Scratch Yours! by A. Ostrovsky (director Vladimir Golub, 1990); Henoveva in A. Kasona’s melodrama Trees Dye Standing (director Vladimir Golub, 2002); Masha in her own play The Three Sisters and Uncle Vanya (2001).

The actress’s sharp comedy talent does not exclude thorough psychological elaboration on the role, her ability to create a spacious and unforgettable character. In the years of work at the Alexandrinsky Theater, Marina Gavrilova played more than 70 roles. Currently she is engaged in Inspector General by N. Gogol (Lyapkina-Tyapkina, director Valery Fokin, 2002).   

Presently, the actress is engaged in two performances: N. Gogol’s The Inspector General (Tyapkina-Lyapkina, Director Valery Fokin, 2002) and V. Levanov’s Ksenia. The History of Love (Director Valery Fokin, 2009).

 

Marina Gavrilova was recognized with the title of Distinguished Artist of Russia by the Verdict of the President of the Russian Federation as of January 10, 2008.

In Valery Fokin’s Inspector General Marina Gavrilova was also Asistant Director. There are other dramatic experiences in her creative baggage, as well as independent productions implemented on the Smaller Stage of the Alexandrinsky Theater. She had staged here a performance after Somerset Maugham’s Theater (1998),  and also her original plays Deceptions (1997), The Three Sisters and Uncle Vanya (2001), The Unknown (after M. Lermontov’s Masquerade). Marina Gavrilova’s plays are staged not only on the Smaller Stage of the Alexandrinsky Theater, but also at other Russian theaters: Stars of the Silent Pictures (The Comedian’s Shelter and the Russian Drama Theater in Bishkek); We are from Odessa, Hello! (The Theater of Musical Comedy); Cinderella in Venice, A Joyful Island of Catherine’s Times, An Apple Lady, A New Russian Offspring, Julia’s Theater (Music Hall), and others.

Presently, the actress is engaged in two performances: N. Gogol’s The Inspector General (Tyapkina-Lyapkina, Director Valery Fokin, 2002) and V. Levanov’s Ksenia. The History of Love (Director Valery Fokin, 2009). She is engaged in the group scenes of W.Shakespeare's Hamlet (Director Valery Fokin, 2010)
