Julia Marchenko graduated from the Vakhtangov Theater School named after B. Shchukin (Ye. Knyazev’s course) in 2004. Her diploma role was Alla Vadimovna in “Zoika’s Apartment” by M. Bulgakov. In 2003, she was invited to play the part of Anya in E. Nyakroshyus’ staging of “The Cherry Orchard” (a joint project of K. Stanislavsky Fund and the Meno Fortas Theater). In 2004, she received “The Moscow debuts” award for this role in the nomination for the best female part in a drama theater.
She has worked at the Alexandrinsky Theater since 2004. The list of her roles includes: Laura and Louise (The Little Tragedies by A. Pushkin, Director Grigory Kozlov, 2004); Sofia and Nina Zarechnaya (Engagement after Yu. Knyazev and A. Chekhov, Director Alexander Galibin, 2004); Klara Olsufievna (The Double after Fyodor Dostoyevsky, Director Valery Fokin, 2005). In August 2005, Yulia Marchenko was honored with the Sberbank Prize by the results of the 2004/2005 season. In 2006, she played the role of Iocasta, Spouse and Mother of Oedipus Rex in Sophocles’ tragedy Oedipus Rex (Director Theodoros Terzopoulos); and the role of Masha in the performance The Living Corps by L. Tolstoy (Director Valery Fokin, 2006). Presently, Yulia Marchenko is the leading young actress of the Alexandrinsky Theater. Her repertoire also includes the role of Nina Zarechnaya in Khrystian Lupa’s performance The Seagull by A. Chekhov (2007); the role of Agafia Tikhonovna in The Marriage by N. Gogol (Director Valery Fokin, 2008); the role of Elena Andreyevna in Uncle Vanya by A. Chekhov (Director Andrey Serban, 2009); and the role of Liza, the friend of the main character in the performance Izotov by M. Durnenkov (Director Andrey Moguchy, 2009).
Marchenko also works in the cinema.
In the new Oskaras Korshunovas’ performance “The Taming of the Shrew” by W. Shakespeare (2010), she is playing several roles: Usherette that is trying to kick away the drunken Sly from the auditorium; Lord’s Assistant recording each word of the powerful Master of the Show, and the Rich Widow the misfortunate Bianca’s admirer Hortensio will marry to. In the performance “The Fortune” by A. Moguchy and K. Filippov she is also playing two roles: Freken Light and her sister, the Queen of Night (Director Andrey Moguchy, 2011). In the new performance “Hedda Gabler” by H. Ibsen (Director K. Ginkas, 2011) she plays the role of Fru Tea Elvsted, Hedda’s rival.
In 2011, she became Laureate of the Breakthrough Youth Theater Award (for the best performing of a major female role: for the role of Liza in Andrey Moguchy’s performance “Izotov”). In Andrey Moguchy and K. Filippov’s performance “The Fortune” she also plays two roles: Freken Light and her sister, the Queen of the Night (Director Andrey Moguchy, 2011).
