About theatre / Creative Crew / Gintaras Sodeika

(B. 27.04.1961)

Sodeika graduated from the Lithuanian Music Academy in 1986 (Professor Julius Yuzelyunas’s composition class). At the beginning of his career, Sodeika’s work was informed with unconventionality - happenings, site-specific works, sound installations, compositions of instrumental theatre.

Gintaras Sodeika is author of symphony and chamber music, but he is best known for his music for theatre productions. The concert trend of his music is also noted for certain theatricality and references to contemporary popular culture. The composer himself describes his works of recent years as 'academic techno' - a whimsical combination of traditional musical values with new technologies. Sodeika’s works often combine elements of minimalism and jazz, and are not void of bizarre humor and self-irony. In 1998, he was awarded the Christopher Prize as the best theatre composer in Lithuania (performance “Roberto Zucco”) and in 2006, the Gold Stage Cross (Prize for the best music for a drama performance in the season of 2005/2006 for the performance “Playing the Victim”). He was also awarded with the Prize of the International Contact Theater Festival for his music for “Playing the Victim” (Torun, Poland).

In 1999-2003, Sodeika served as Chairman of the Lithuanian Composer‘s Union, and in 2000-2006, he was President of the Lithuanian Copyright Association; in 2003-2005 and 2006-2008, he was the Lithuanian Vice-Minister for Culture. He has been working with Oskaras Korshunovas since 1990.
