Sergey Stolyarov graduated from the Kharkiv State Polytechnical Institute in 1970 and from the Kharkiv Institute of Arts, Department of Puppet Theater Production, in 1976.

In 1976, he organized and got at the head of the Volyn Regional Puppet Theater (City of Lutsk). In 1979-1983, he worked as the Chief Artist of the Altay Regional Puppet Theater (Barnaul). In 1983-1984, he served as Director General at the Orenburg Regional Puppet Theater. In 1984-1987, Stolyarov was Director General at the Buryat Republican Puppet Theater (Ulan Ude); in 1987-1993, he was Director General of the Khakassia Republican Skazka (Fairy Tale) Theater (Abakan). In the season of 1994/1995, he worked as producing director at the St. Petersburg State Interior Theater.  In 2006-2007, he was Director General of the Kamchatka Regional Puppet Theater (Petropavlovsk-Kamchatsky). Sergey Stolyarov directed performances in many theaters in Russia and abroad.

Altogether, Stolyarov created more than 130 performances as director, stage master and in many cases playwright. The most important were “The Great Kukko” by B. Yunger (Lutsk, 1978), “The Son of a Mountain and a Lake” by N. Volpe and S. Stolyarov (after an Altay Epos; Barnaul, 1981); “Thyl” after G. Gorin and H. Bosch (Barnaul, 1982),  “The Nightingale,” a ballet after H.C. Andersen (Orenburg, 1983); “ How They Fell Down from the Moon” (Orenburg, 1984),  “Le Petit Poucet”  after V. Zhukovsky  (Ulan-Ude, 1985), “The Mystery of the Golden Mundarga” after an Indian-American epos (Ulan-Ude, 1987); “A Street of the Dumb” after letters, interviews, and lectures of F. Garcia Lorca; “The Puppet Play of Don Cristobel” by F. Garcia Lorca (Abakan, 1988);  “Petrushka and the Knight” (Abakan, 1990), “Altyn-Aryg Hero Girl Born in the White Mountain On Her Own” after a Khakassian epos “Altyn Aryg” (Abakan, 1991); “A Tzar-Wanderer” after an Indian epos “Makabkharata” (Petropavlovsk-Kamchatsky, 1988); opera “Baika” (“Renard”) by I. Stravinsky (Ensemble of Folk music under direction of D. Pokrovsky, Moscow, 1994), “Children’s Corner” after P. Tchaikovsky (The Big Puppet Theater, St. Petersburg, 1997),  “That’s a Crock…” after Novgorodian stories (Maly Theater, Novgorod Veliky, 1999); “Run You, Run…” with R. Moskovaya’s characters from the play “Where Are You Running, Colt?”  (the Municipal New Theater, Krasnodar, 2001);  “Toys for Imprudent Children” after E.T.A. Hoffman’s fairy tale “The Nutcracker” (Yaroslavl Puppet Theater, 2001); “The Christmas Star Was Shining” after J. Supervielle’s novella “A Bull and a Donkey by the Crib” (Fairy Tale Puppet Theater, St. Petersburg, 2002); “Tristan and Isolde the Yurods” (Maly Theater, Novgorod Veliky, 2002); “The Desire Is Called Faust” (Derzhaven Kuklen Theater, Plovdiv, 2005), “The Miser” by J.B. Moliere (Petropavlovsk-Kamchatsky, 2006).

Stolyarov took part in many scenography exhibits and theater festivals; he was the arranger and artistic director of several creative laboratories and festivals. He organized master classes of puppet production and manipulating methods; workshops on the techniques of the eastern theater and masque theater, on an actor with puppet techniques, and techniques for an actor in the Pantheater model.

Stolyarov took part in various international theater projects: the Russian-French project of the Interstudio International Master Shop of the Synthesis and Animation Theater (Toulouse, Panchatantra, 1993), the Russian-Finnish project “Kirpu Circus I J ? hanan Kamalia” (Lappeenranta-Vyborg, 2000-2001),  the Finnish-Russian project “The Pretty Nice at the Flea Circus” (Vyborg – Lappeenranta, 2001-2002). 

Stolyarov published articles in various magazines, including Ukranian Theater, Theater Life, Ornamental Art in the USSR, Kukart, and in Russian and foreign newspapers.

Stolyarov taught at the Kharkiv Institute of Arts (course of a Puppet Theater Actor, 1975-1976); at the Interstudio branch of the St. Petersburg State Academy of Theater Arts (course of the Theater of Musical Tradition, under the guidance of D. Pokrovsky (1993-1996) and course of Musical Theater under the guidance of V. Gaivoronsky (1994-1996). He also taught a Theater Space course at the Conflictology Chair of the Philosophy Department at St. Petersburg State University (1996-1997).  Presently, he is involved with various theater projects for drama and puppet theaters, educational programs and street actions.

At the Alexandrinsky Theater Stolyarov decorated the performance “A Fly” after I. Brodsky’s poem “A Fly” and K. Chukovsky’s fairy tale “The Buzzer Fly” (director Oleg Yeremin, 2007).
