Modern drama is a rare guest at the Academy stage of the Alexandrinsky Theater.  Mikhail Durnenkov’s play “Sanctuary” was the starting point of the stage version of the text. In the process of rehearsals the play writer and director Andrey Moguchy created a number of variations of the expansion of the plot, trying to show more clearly the acute conflict inside the main character and to reveal the “hot buttons” typical for an entire generation of people trouble-free externally and desperate inside, running away from themselves and longing to find a way to their own selves.  The action is taking place in a certain conditional space, where the reality and images cannot be separated from each other, and the major character (Vitaly Kovalenko) is both the writer and the hero of his own story at one and the same time.   Everything is absolutely conditional and genuinely true here.  Decorations, painted on white canvas, show through in the graphics of black lines or disappear with no trace at a certain moment, go down from under the fly-loft or go up into the theater “skies.”  Everything taking place on the stage is video recorded and immediately shown on the screen; the characters walk out of the screen in the direct sense of the word, play their roles and turn into black silhouettes on the white background again.   Angels-magicians played by the oldest masters of the stage, Alexandrinsky coryphaei Nikolay Marton and Rudolf Kuld, watch all these metamorphoses intently.  In this strange black and white carousel, imperturbable angels-charlatans demonstrate tricks with following their disclosure, and immediately after that they become witnesses of the “absolutely authentic death” of the major character.   Oleg Karavaichuk’s music brings a tragic overtone into the stage action.
