Valery Fokins performance after L. Tolstoy play The Living Corpse continues  the line of acute directors contemplations on the tragic relations of a human being with the ruthless earth-fed reality prompting the hero to abandon this world.  Peoples Artist of Russia Pyotr Semak plays Fyodor Protasov, the key role for the philosophy of the production in the new edition.

Speaking about The Living Corpse Valery Fokin stressed, For me, the main topic of the play is the theme of going away.  This is especially essential today.  In our confused and mixed life, where anything can happen, the problem of intentional and conscientious falling out from this endless circle is especially crucial.  Today we can see people who are absolutely well-to-do but who abandon the comfort of their lives exactly for the reason they cannot adopt the false establishment of the society as a whole.  I am interested in such a Fyodor Protasov who makes up his mind not in the state of another heavy drinking session, not in a drunken stupor, and not for the sake of a romantic drive in a gipsy medium but in a result of long contemplations, solving a deep soul problem.  I believe that Tolstoy is nearing Dostoyevsky in this play more than in any other composition with this attempt to look inside the character and understand what he really lives for.
The second edition of Valery Fokins performance is the fourth production of The Living Corpse on the stage of the Alexandrinsky Theater.  Vs. Meyerhold and A.L. Zagarov (1911; renewed by N.N. Arbatov in 1921) had directed this play here as well as V.P. Kozhin and A.N. Dauson (1950).  Such famous actors as Roman Apollonsky, Pavel Samoylov, Illarion Pevtsov, and Nickolay Simonov had played the major role of Fedya Protasov.
