The Alexandrinsky Theater is presenting premiere of Distinguished Artist of Russia Igor Volkov’s one-man-show An Anxious Box Keeper’s Sketch-Book. This is the second job of the “Monologues in the Tsar’s Lobby” cycle; People’s Artist of Russia Nickolay Marton started this cycle with his performance of the same name composed of pieces from plays of classic repertoire. Igor Volkov is an outstanding master of one-man-shows; his individual jobs were honored with theater awards, recognized by critics, and admired by public. In the actor’s repertoire, this genre had got its best realizations in the performances A Merry Cemetery after A. Chekhov’s stories; A Grumbler’s Confession after Fyodor Dostoyevsky’s diaries, and The Last Gogol’s Dream. They all are united by the broad-scale amplitude of emotional story-telling, putting together the tender lyrics and coarse grotesque; elegant humor and tragic compassion to the character.
An Anxious Box Keeper’s Sketch-Book was composed of Mikhail Zoshchenko’s stories Madonna; Medical Case History, and other. Igor Volkov often is the author of his one-man-shows; in the new job, he is the author of the literature and stage composition of the performance, and he also plays the role of Zoshchenko’s stories’ character, a small man Vasily Bylinkin. Piano player Inna Andreyeva is also taking part in the performance.
The 50-minute performance goes with no intermissions.
The first night of the performance is scheduled for December 7, 2013.
