16.06.2009 Presentation of the project of Reconstruction of a costume from “The Masquerade” performance

On June 15, 2009, presentation of a new project “Reconstruction of a costume from ‘The Masquerade’ performance” took place at the Actors Lobby of the theater. A graduate of the Academy of Theater Arts and costume artist/technologist Nadezhda SHEKHURDINA presented her diploma project: the costume of Monta from the second episode of Vs. Meyerhold’s legendary performance “The Masquerade” (1917), reconstructed after A.Y. Golovin’s sketch. A story of the performance and the phase-by-phase creation of a complex masquerade costume was accompanied with a slide show of Golovin’s sketches of decorations, curtains, paintings and costumes presented in chronological sequence of the performance along with photos of the group scenes of the second episode of the performance and some particular characters.



15.06.2009 Distinguished Artist of Russia Marina Gavrilova celebrates her jubilee

On June 20, 2009 Distinguished Artist of Russia Marina Gavrilova will celebrate her jubilee. Marina Gavrilova is well known not only as a brilliant character actress who had played over 70 roles at the Alexandrinsky Theater and directed several performances on its Smaller Stage, but also as a popular comedian. Texts of her plays made foundation of a number of musicals produced not only in St. Petersburg, but many Russian theaters. Among her plays are such ones as: “Stars of the Silent Screen” (Comedienne’s Shelter and Drama Theater in Bishkek), “We Are from Odessa, Hello!” (Theater of Misical Comedy), “Zolushka in Venice,” “A Joyful Island of the Times of Catherine,” “An Apple Lady,” “A New Russian Babe,” “Julia’s Theater” (Music Hall), etc. At the Alexandrinsky Theater, Marina Gavrilova is presently engaged in the “Inspector General” by N. Gogol (Lyapkina-Tyapkina, Director Valery Fokin, 2002) and “Ksenia. The History of Love” by V. Levanov (Director Valery Fokin, 2009).



15.06.2009 Distinguished Artist of Russia Semyon Sytnik celebrates his creative jubilee

On June 20, 2009, Distinguished Artist of Russia Semyon Sytnik will celebrate his creative jubilee: 40 years on the Alexandrinsky Stage. The entire theater career of Semyon Sytnik cannot be separated from the famous Alexandrinsky stage. A student of the outstanding actor and theater pedagogue Vasily Merkuriev, Semyon Sytnik was admitted to the company right after his graduation from LGITMiK (Leningrad State Institute of Theater, Music and Cinema) in 1969. The young actor had a happy ensemble of his looks: aristocratic appearance, elegant manners and unique mobility and plasticity along with the talent of improvisation and bright theatricality. Sytnik was absolutely brilliant as Tartalya (1976) in the performance after C. Gozzi’s “The Green Bird” staged in the tradition of the Italian del arte comedy, which allowed the young actor not to become a hostage of a particular line of characters.



20.05.2009 Marina Bozek’s Lecture

On May 18 and 20, 2009, at the Actors Lobby of the theater, French arts expert and linguist Marina Bozek gave a series of lectures to students of St. Petersburg universities on the topic of “Christian Saints in the West-European Art: Stories of Life, Legends and Symbols.” "She accompanied her lectures with unique iconographic materials: her slides made in numerous museums and Catholic cathedrals of France, Belgium, Germany, Italy, and Spain. Her lectures were carried out under the frames of the theater’s program of “Formation of youth audience and cultural theater media” and affiliated with the International Museum Day traditionally celebrated on May 18.



20.05.2009 Jubilee of Distinguished Artist of Russia Igor Volkov

On May 23, 2009, Distinguished Artist of Russia Igor N. Volkov will celebrate his 50th birthday. Igor Volkov is one of the leading actors of the Alexandrinsky Theater playing in performances of such different directors as Valery Fokin, Krystian Lupa, Andrey Moguchy, Theodoros Terzopoulos, Yury Butusov, and Alexander Galibin. The Vakhtangov Theater’s school and bright theatricality are traceable in the stage manner of Igor Volkov, as are elegance of the form, attraction to psychological paradoxes, and ethical assessment of the character. In the present repertoire of the actor there are such roles as: Kreont ("Oedipus Rex” by Sophocles), Alexandrov (“The Living Corps” by L. Tolstoy), Mayor (“The Ivans” after “The Story of Quarrel between Ivan Ivanovich and Ivan Nikiforovich” and other writings by N. Gogol), Dorn (“The Seagull” by A. Chekhov)



19.05.2009 “The Museum Night” at the Alexandrinsky Theater

On May 16, 2009, on the eve of the International Museum Day, tours of the Russian Drama Museum and the theater building were carried out for students of St. Petersburg higher schools (Northwest Academy of State Service, SPBSU, University of Economics and Finances, University of Cinema and Television) at the Alexandrinsky Theater. The tours were organized under the frames of the theater’s program of “Formation of youth audience and cultural theater media.” This was the way in which the theater supported the all-city “Museum Night” action



15.05.2009 Business game for students: “PR promotion of the Alexandrinsky Theater performances”

On May 15, 2009, an inter-university business game “PR promotion of the Alexandrinsky Theater performances” took place at the Tzar’s Lobby of the Theater. Students of the PR departments were to plan a PR campaign for one of the performances of the current repertoire of the big and smaller forms. Five teams had presented their pr projects: St. Petersburg Bonch-Bruevich State University of Telecommunications (“Flowers for Charley” by D. Keys); St. Petersburg State University of Technology and Design and Institute of Business Communications (“The Seagull” by A. Chekhov and “The Double” by Feodor Dostoyevsky)



20.04.2009 Laureates of the 2009 Golden Mask Award

On April 18, 2009, the official Golden Mask award ceremony and celebration of the 15th anniversary of the festival took place on the stage of the Stanislavsky and Nemirovich-Danchenko Musical Theater. The Alexandrinsky Theater's performances received the principal awards at the drama theater section. Krystian Lupa's "Seagull" was named as the "Best Drama Performance of Big Format." Another Alexandrinsky performance, "The Marriage," was awarded in two nominations: "The Best Director's Work" (Valery Fokin) and "The Best Artist's Work" (Alexander Borovsky).



02.04.2009 Jubilee Event Dedicated to the 200th Anniversary of N. Gogol’s Birthday

A jubilee event dedicated to the 200th anniversary of N. Gogol’s birthday took place at the Alexandrinsky Theater on April 1, 2009. The 2002 Valery Fokin’s performance “The Inspector General” was shown; the performance has been honored with the State Award of Russia, the National Theater Award “The Golden Mask” and the top theater award of St. Petersburg “The Golden Soffit.” Artistic Director of the theater Valery Fokin and famous St. Petersburg writer Daniil Granin spoke about Gogol prior to the performance. “The Inspector General” gave start to the Gogol Week at the Alexandrinsky Theater. On April 3 and 4, Andrey Moguchy’s performance “The Ivans” after “How Ivan Ivanovich Had Quarreled with Ivan Nikiforovich” and other stories by N. Gogol will be shown. This performance had also been honored with the National Theater Award “The Golden Mask.” On April 5, the public can see Valery Fokin’s performance “The Marriage.”  



02.04.2009 A Polish Award for Russian Directors

Director Andrey Moguchy, Scenic Director Mikhail Platonov, and Composer Alexander Manotskov were honored with the prestigious theater award for the performace "Boris Godunov" they had directed at the Polsky Teatr Dramatyczny m.st.Warszawy im.Gustawa Holoubka in September 2008. 27 performances from various Polish theaters took part in the All-Poland Competition of classic European literature directions (Teatralna Inscenizacje Dawnych Dziel Literatury Europejskiej) which was carried out from October 1, 2008 to February 28, 2009.
