Based on Ljubivoje Tadić’s idea, the libretto for the production has been inspired by the screenplay for Dušan Kovačević’s film of the same name Who is singing out there (1980), directed by Slobodan Šijan.
Composer Vojislav Voki Kostić wrote an author's adaptation of the music for the film for the ballet.
The play was staged by choreographer and director Staša Zurovac.
The script and libretto are based on real events. On April 5, 1941, on the last day before the invasion of Germany and the Allies into Yugoslavia, a motley group of random fellow travellers goes by old bus from a remote town to Belgrade.
There are a lot of comic situations waiting for them on the road. At the end of the way, they get bombed...
"Who's singing out there?" is a Balkan tragicomedy, philosophical, wise and grotesque.
"From the first moment, the audience breathes together with the performers and becomes another passenger in this crazy ride. And, of course, the outstanding and main trump card of the performance is the music of Vojislav Voki Kostić, a composer who is among the greats <... > He made an excellent stylisation of his own music for the film, based on its main motives, the most noticeable of which is the constantly repeated tunes of the gypsies and this desperate desire to "just dream". "It was a great idea to include the ballet "Who's singing out there?" in the repertoire of the National Theatre in Belgrade <... > By the magic hand of the choreographer-director, this work became a poetic metaphor for complex Balkan life <... > And Vojislav Voki Kostić created a music-masterpiece that exudes a mixture of ecstasy and irony."
