"Zhang Juzheng" is a play by the Beijing People's Art Theatre based on historical events. The story centres on the life of Zhang Juzheng, the outstanding prime minister of the Ming dynasty, a strategist and reformer who brought about a number of important changes in China in the 16th century that influenced the economic and social order of the country.

The action of the play describes the events of the first decade of Emperor Wanli's reign. Zhang Juzheng, appointed prime minister in 1572, faces serious economic problems in the state and decides to implement reforms, starting with cutting his own salary. The willingness to take responsibility for the fate of the country becomes one of the leading themes of the production.
