People's Artist of the Republic of Armenia, actor, director, professor.
Graduated from the acting and then directing faculty of Yerevan Theater Institute.
Since 2015 - Artistic Director of the G. Sundukyan National Academic Theater.
In 1975-1982 - actor of the G. Sundukyan State Academic Theater, in 1982-1988 - stage director of the G. Sundukyan State Academic Theater.
1988-1994 - Artistic Director of the Yerevan State Theater of Musical Comedy after A. Paronyan.
He founded the Edgar Elbakyan Theater of Comedy and Drama in 1994.
From 2000 to 2015 he was the Artistic Director and Director of the Yerevan State Marionette Theater.
Since 2012 he has been the Head of the Department of Directing at the Armenian State Pedagogical University after Kh. Abovyan․
Among the productions at the Gabriel Sundukyan National Academic Theater: "Forty Days of Musa Dagh" (Franz Werfel), "One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest" (Ken Kesey), "The Career of Arturo Ui, which might not have been" (Bertolt Brecht), "Pepo" (G. Sundukyan), "Respectable Beggars" (A. Paronyan) and others.
In 1993 he received the Yevgeny Vakhtangov Award.
He received the Artavazd Award of the Union of Theater Workers of Armenia both for his acting works and productions ("Ruined Hearth", "Man from La Mancha").
In 2013, he received the "Grigor Narekatsi" Commemorative Medal.
On September 28, 2023 in the program of the XIV International Theatre Festival "Alexandrinsky" will be shown Armen Elbakyan's play "One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest", staged at the National Academic Theatre named after Gabriel Sundukyan (Armenia).
