German theater, founded in Berlin in 1883 by a group of German actors (E. Possart, L. Barnay, F. Gaase, A. Ferste, etc.). At first it was the Association of Actors, headed by the theatrical figure A. L'Arronge. The first years was a theater mainly of classical repertoire. In 1888 the Association of Actors broke up. In 1894 A. L'Arronge left the theater. From 1894 to 1904 the theater was led by director and theater figure Otto Bram (1856 - 1912). I. Kainz, E. Reicher, M. Reinhardt and others joined the theater troupe. From 1905 to 1933 (with interruptions) at the head of the theater was Max Reinhardt (1873 - 1943), who realized a number of monumental productions of classical plays.
Located in the heart of Berlin, the Deutsches Theater consists of two interlocking stages sharing a common facade. The main stage has a seating capacity of 606, while the smaller stage is the Kammerspiele, founded by M. Reinhardt in 1906 for the staging of modern plays, can accommodate 234 spectators. The troupe of 40 actors has 45 plays in its repertoire. The Deutsche Theater produces 20 premieres each season.
The main stage of the Deutsches Theater stages predominantly works from the classical repertoire. These include: Johann W. von Goethe's "FAUST", F. Schiller's "Don Carlos", G. E. Lessing's "Emilia Galloti", "Mina von Barnhelm", W. Shakespeare's "A Midsummer Night's Dream", Aeschylus' "Oresteia" and "The Persians", and Euripides' "Medea". The small stage is intended mainly for productions of modern dramaturgy. In the repertoire of the small stage: "A Long Journey into the Night" by Y. O'Neill, "The Glass Menagerie" by T. Williams, "The Dream" by Y. O'Neill. Williams, "Sleep" J. Foss, "In Schopenhauer's Sleigh" by Ya. Reza. "On the Beasts" by E. Jelinek. Recently in the foyer of the small stage opened "The Box" - another theater platform, presenting works by contemporary playwrights: S. Stephens, E. Volch, M. von Ulsar, brothers Presnyakov.
In 2004 German theater critics named the Deutsches Theater "Theater of the Year". The productions of young talented directors Jürgen Gosch - "Who's Afraid of Virginia Woolf" by E. Albee, "Uncle Vanya" by A. P. Chekhov and Michael Thalheimer "Oresteia" by Aeschylus and "The Rats" by Hauptmann were invited to "Theatertreffen" - a prestigious theater festival presenting productions in German. Actors Nina Hoss and Ulrich Mattes were honored with festival prizes as best performers. The plays "Emilia Galotti" by G. E. Lessing directed by M. Thalheimer and "Lolita" by V. Nabokov directed by Oliver Riese also received prestigious international awards.
At the Third Alexandrinsky International Theater Festival, Deutsches Theater presented two productions by the theater's chief director Michael Thalheimer, "FAUST. Part I" by J. W. von Goethe (17.09, 18.09.2008) and "THE RATS" G. Hauptmann (20.09, 21.09. 2008).
