The National Theater (Nemzeti Színház) is the oldest dramatic theater in Hungary. It was opened in Budapest in 1837 under the name "Magyar Theater", the National Theater has been called the National Theater since 1840.
The troupe, which gathered the best actors of the country who had previously worked on the provincial stage, was headed by the famous writer, critic, poet József Bajza, who became the first director and artistic director of the Hungarian National Theater.
Since July 2013, the Hungarian National Theater has been headed by Attila Vidnyánszky, one of the most gifted directors in Eastern Europe, from Transcarpathia.
In 2014, the Hungarian National Theatre presented in the program of the VIII International Theatre Festival the performances "The Winged Man" (October 10) and "Johanna at the Stake" (October 9).
