Artistic Director of the G. Sundukyan National Academic Theater is Armen Edgarovich Elbakyan, People's Artist of the Republic of Armenia, Professor.
The first Armenian state theater was founded in Yerevan in 1922.
During the first years of its activity the theater managed to gather many famous Armenian actors, directors, writers, composers and artists from different parts of the world. Soon the theater became the main center of Armenian theatrical life.
In 1937 the theater was named after Gabriel Sundukyan. In 1960 it received the status of the Academic Theater.
In those years, the theater had an impressive number of performances, including in its repertoire plays by both Armenian and world-famous playwrights. The theater's tours were in different countries - France, USA, Belarus, Russia, Georgia, Lebanon, Syria.
Today, the Gabriel Sundukyan National Academic Theater continues its dynamic activities, keeping up with the times. In 2019, a new small stage of "Black box" format was built, opening new opportunities for modern theatrical approaches. The theater pays great attention to educational programs. In 2019, the theater launched a special educational program "Class+Classics" for high school students.
The theater focuses on international projects, cooperation, tours and participation in festivals.
At the XIV International Festival "Alexandrinsky" on September 28, 2023 will be shown the play "One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest" staged by Gabriel Sundukyan National Academic Theatre after Armen Elbakyan (Main Stage of Alexandrinsky Theatre), on September 30 - the play "Decameron" staged by Lili Elbakyan (New Stage of Alexandrinsky Theatre).
