The Teatro Stabile di Napoli (TEATRO STABILE DI NAPOLI - TEATRO NAZIONALE) is relatively young, it was founded in September 2002 and already in the summer of 2005 received the status of National. The headquarters of the association Teatro Stabile di Napoli is located in the ancient multi-tiered building of the Mercadante Theater, built in 1777-1778, designed by the military architect Francesco Sicuro with funds taken from the Jesuit Order, expelled from the Kingdom of Naples.
The stage was inaugurated on July 31, 1779 with an opera by Domenico Cimarosa and was originally called Teatro del Fondo, since the construction budget was allocated from a special Revenue Department Fund, to which the money of the Jesuits was directed. In the 1870s the Teatro del Fondo was rebuilt and named after the composer Giuseppe Saverio Raffaele Mercadante. The next reconstruction in the second half of the XX century lasted several decades, after which the Teatro del Mercadante was opened only in 1995. Nowadays, this stage hosts mainly dramatic performances.
At the IX Alexandrinsky Festival the Stabile di Napoli Theatre presented a performance based on Anton Chekhov's play "The Cherry Orchard" directed by Luca de Fusco (September 18 and 19, 2015. Main stage of the Alexandrinsky Theatre).
