WU HSING-KUO

Taiwan

Artistic director of the Contemporary Legend Theater and virtuoso artist.

From the age of eleven, he studied at the Fu Hsing School of Chinese Opera, where he specialized in Wu Sheng (martial male roles). He graduated from the theater department of the University of Culture. He was the lead dancer of the Cloud Gate Dance Theater. He studied under Master Zhou Zheng Rong, expanding his skills in civilian and martial Lao Sheng (elderly male roles).

He was awarded the Golden Military Award for Best Actor three times.

Founded the Modern Legend Theater and became the leading actor and director of production in it. The perfection of forms of artistic synthesis of Western and Eastern cultures, past and present in Wu Hsing-kuo's productions allowed to speak about him as one of the best authors of cross-cultural productions in the world.

He teaches drama at the graduate school of National Taiwan University of the Arts. He is a recipient of the 2011 Taiwan National Award for Literature and Arts, and in the same year he was made a Chevalier of the French Order of Arts and Letters.

The Ninth Alexandrinsky Festival presented Wu Hsing-kuo's play, a stage adaptation of William Shakespeare's tragedy King Lear (October 3 and 4, 2015 at 19.00. Main Stage of the Alexandrinsky Theatre).
