The Emperor’s Hall
Decoration of the Emperor’s premises at the Alexandrinsky Theatre in the epoch of Nicholas I is reproduced in this hall. The colours of decoration – the blue silk and gilded ornaments – remind us of the initial decoration of the theatre designed by C. Rossi.
A portrait of the wife of Nicholas I, Alexandra Fedorovna (Alexandrina), is on the wall: the theatre bears her name. The historical and stage property items of the decoration as if reminding us of this historical epoch that had later regained its theatre life on the stage. Court gowns, official garments of emperors, senators, governors, chamberlains, and guardians show us the entire variety of the epoch…
This high society world created an atmosphere in which the art of the Pushkin and Lermontov ages had emerged. Generating the glittering splendor of the environment was brilliant poetic talent that determined and outlined the Russian culture. Thanks to the performances dedicated to A. Pushkin (The Autumn in Boldino by Yu. Svirin, director R. Goryayev, 1969) and M. Lermontov (Lermontov by B. Lavrenev, director B. Dmohovskoy, 1953) the high society world of the Nicholas’ era had found its implementation on the Alexandrinsky Stage. Photos of those performances you can see on the walls. Costumes that had been supplementing the collection in the course of the 20th century are displayed in the show-cases.
